HAR 02: Excavation & uncovering of the Arkadiane Street II

Costs    € 25,386.00
Duration    8 weeks
Code    HAR 02

As a transhipment point for goods and wares, the harbour of Ephesos contributed significantly to the prosperity of the antique city. The most important connection between the harbour and the centre of the city was the Arkadiane Street. The boulevard (about 500 m long and 11 m wide) started at the Middle Harbour Gate and ended up at the Great Theatre.
The objective of this project is the complete uncovering and excavation of the Arkadiane Street.

In 2012, a thick layer of earth was removed in large part from the Arkadiane Street. Due to the enormous mass of debris the uncovering could not be completed in 2012. This work will continue in 2013.

Excavation work will focus on the Late Antique Craftsmen’s Quarter south-east of the Central Harbour Gate to continue research there.

The uncovering of the complete boulevard is of some importance for the site management of Ephesos. It is the first step for realising a new visitor’s entrance near the harbour area. Visitors will then be able to enter the ancient city from the harbour as it was possible in antiquity.
